Scarlett Johansson Explains Turning Down Studio Requests to Join Social Media: “I Get a Lot of Pressure”

In an interview with InStyle, Johansson briefly touched on why she is part of a small group of celebrities — the likes of which include Brad Pitt, Emily Blunt, George Clooney, and Kristen Stewart — who have not yet joined social media to interact with their fans. “I mean, even today, I got an email from Universal [Pictures], and they’re like, ‘Hey, would you consider joining Instagram in tandem with the release of Jurassic World Rebirth?’ [I] get a lot of pressure to join social media,” the actor revealed. While she has toyed with the idea, it was never for too long. “Is there a way I could do this and stay true to who I am? It didn’t feel like I could,” she explained.
Johansson has been acting steadily since she was 10 years old, although she didn’t begin to garner acclaim or recognition until 2003 when she starred in Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring. Her star power then began to grow rapidly, leading to roles in movies by Woody Allen and Christopher Nolan and, in 2010, a co-starring role in the Marvel movie Iron Man 2. Johansson is now perhaps best known for portraying Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in Iron Man 2 and eight other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.
